modprobe ppp or insmod ppp and then lsmod for a list.
That will show if the kernel can find the ppp.o module, normaly speaking
most distribution kernels have ppp support as a module when that is
installed its found in /lib/modules/2.0.36/net
As to running ./configure i would imagen that concerns the ppp source and
NOT the kernel source as that is an invalid command for making any kernel.
