It sounds like you have Redhat then as you say runlevel 5 which is what it
uses, however slackware used to use runlevel 4 for X.

When changing the line;

id:3:initdefault: to;
id:5:initdefault:

You must make sure that at the bottom of inittab there is a line
"uncommented" saying something like;

x:5:respawn:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon


That would be;

x1:4:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc.4

For slackware up to 3.6 possably higher versions as well but i cant be sure
as i dont have a higher version to check.
