thanks to those who pointed out the mistake in my /etc/hosts,
but unfortunately, that was an error in my re-typing of it.
the file itself is correct (supposedly).
but i'm still having trouble with _something_ (else?)
the symptoms include gnorpm not allowing root to do anything with gnorpm
(viz below:)
[root]# gnorpm

GnomeUI-WARNING **: While connecting to session manager:
Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols specified are
supported and host-based authentication failed.

and linuxconf is not allowing me to activate changes to users.
it gives the following message:

invalid PID file: /var/run/postmaster.pid
which i have traced to it actually failing when trying to start postgres.
(which i tried myself) viz:

[root]# /etc/rc.d/rc3.d/S85postgresql start
Starting postgresql service: /usr/bin/postmaster does not find the database system.
Expected to find it in the PGDATA directory "/var/lib/pgsql", but unable to open file
with pathname "/var/lib/pgsql/base/template1/pg_class".

No data directory -- can't proceed.
postmaster []

do i just 'touch' this directory/file ? it seems a bit strange to me.
i havent deleted anything...

i'm not sure if my machine should be able to ping itself when it's not on a network,
because it cannot, anyway :-(
