I dont want to sound defeatist, however what you are trying to do is no
trivial task espesaly for a newbie, you can and quite possably will render
you system unusable if you make one little mistake when upgrading libs.
My advice is to backup all you personal files and programs, tar archives
etc, and install redhat-6.0 i can assure you all you need is there after the
initial install.
You say yourself "and I am a *real* newbie" do yourself a favour and get
6.0.
