When you say "and then it hangs", do you mean literally that -- that you
wait for several minutes and get no response, not even an explicit error
message? I confess to having no familiarity with RH5.1, but I have done many
NFS installs using Slackware, so these suggestions assume the two
distributions are similar in how they use NFS.
1. On the server (the already-configured Linux host that holds the CD), do
you have the CD filesystem entered in /etc/exports? Do you have its NIC
configured correctly ("ifconfig eth0")? Do you have its routing configured
correctly ("route -n")?
2. On the client side (the host you are trying to install Linux into), does
the RH boot disk detect its Ethernet card? Are you using an IP address on
the same net (as defined in the routing table) that the server thinks it is
on? Do you have any unusual equipment (the best example is a Winmodem) that
might be creating an IRQ conflict?
3. Is the physical link between server and host okay? Do the Link lights on
the hub ports light up when the two hosts are plugged in? Do the "sending"
lights flash off and on after you enter the IP address? (You are connecting
through a hub, right?)
This is the best I can do in response to the general way you've posed the
question. If none of this leads you to a solution, and someone else doesn't
spot a problem that is specific to Red Har, you might try a more detailed
followup post, describing what you did in more exact terms (what IP
addresses, the output of the various things I suggested you check, etc.).
