i would remove the version you have using rpm,
find what netscape you have installed, as root by the way,
rpm -qa | grep netscape
that will show all packages related to netscape. then remove them,
rpm -e <netscape package's listed earlier>
to untar the new version,
tar zxvf <new netscape file.tar.gz>
(note: see "man tar" for detailed info on tar)
this will create a directory with a name a mile long, i just
cd nets*
to the new directory. as long as there is no other directory that
begins with nets, it will put you in the new directory. read the
README and it will tell you haow to install netscape.
after the install i then delete the untarred directory.
one more thing. if you have mail you want to save in your home
directory, backup your ~/nsmail directory then copy it back later.
or you could avoid all this by just going to redhat updates and ftp
the new rpm. http://www.redhat.com/download/mirror.html
i personally just get the rpm now, it's one of the main reasons to
use red hat, why not use it. it will make life a lot easier in three
months when yet another version comes out. if you do use the tarred
version, remember netscape has the quick update feature you can use.
have fun
