"Core" files are memory dumps of the memory that a program was using
before it died. Usually, when a program crashes, it dumps all of its
memory to disk in a file called "core." That way, if you're a developer,
or just a curious soul, you can try to figure out what exactly was going
on.

You sure can, so long as you're not filing any bug reports or anything
like that. Sometimes, if you file a bug report, it's a good idea to have
a core file so that you can give it to the developers.
