2.3.13 ??  is development, or do you mean 2.2.xx, realy it does not matter,
if you want send me your /usr/src/linux/.config i will then see what can be
changed to get the kernel size down. You will also need to send me the
computer hardware details.
424kB is not so bad, but just how many modules has the kernel compile
produced.
You can find that out with;

ls -al /lib/modules/`uname -r`/* | wc -l
subtracht 4 lines for every directory, that will then show the amount of
modules.

My kernel 2.2.5 is 368kB and i have 166 modules.
I could get it even smaller and increase the module count.
