If you use Red Hat, and bash, add the commands to ~/.bash_profile

Any other distro, and bash, or just about any other shell: ~/.profile

As for X, in KDE, add items to the Autostart folder. I'm not sure about
GNOME, and I'm not sure about any other environment. There are other
files througout the system that you can edit -- I'm sure that someone else
will reply with information on that, because I don't have it :-).
