Right...run "defrag" to clean up your file system, then use
something like Partition Magic to free up some space and
create a new partition, where you can install Linux. If you
purchase Mandrake, it comes with a copy of Partition Magic.
Otherwise, I've heard there are other programs out there
that do a non-destructive partition/format.
What you will end up with is a hard drive with windows 98
on it and another "blank" partition with nothing on it.
This "blank" partition is the one you want to install Linux
to. Just make sure you know what order the partitions are
so you can install Linux safely w/o destroying Windows.
