I had the same thing happen to me. Just put RH 5.2 on old i486DX/2 66mhz
that was collecting dust in the closet (Hercules b/w monitor too!). It
would refuse to put LILO in the Master Boot Record or the boot sector of
the first hard drive, leaving me stuck with booting from the floppy
(PITA). Two causes of this problem were: 1)I neglected to 'activate' the
partition whose MBR or boot sector would have gotten written to, AND: 2)
the two hard drives I was using both have 1057 sectors, which can give
LILO (and dos stuff, too, if you have a dos partition!) fits when you
boot the computer. My solution was to install a third hard drive that
only has 1011 cylinders and configure it as /dev/hda, and put / file
system on it and make sure that it's 'activated'. After I did this, and
reinstalled RH 5.2, I had no problems whatsoever getting LILO to write
to /dev/hda's Master Boot Record, and it would now boot from the hard
disk! My next big step with this box is to try getting XWindows working
with the Hercules monitor...
I hope this helps you some!
Cheers,
