A better way of doing this would be to download all the messages from
the server (deleting them off the server of course), and then set up
procmail to do the sorting/deleting on your computer automatically.
So it would be...
mail-server -> fetchmail -> procmail -> mail reading program
You would need to set your mail program up so that it only reads local
mail.
And if you want to you could eliminate the procmail step if you used
Gnus as your MUA.
