This will let you check mail. You need to use the userid and password for
the account that receives the mail; depending on details of your setup that
you haven't told us, that may be the ppp userid or a different userid.

To send mail, you need to have a MTA daemon, such as sendmail, running. This
is what makes the Linux host an SMTP server. If you are receiving mail on
the Linux host via SMTP (and not, for example, by using fetchmail), you are
probably okay here. The surest check is to telnet to port 25 on the Linux
host and see if you get a response.
