I tried to install NETSC4.51.tar.gz.
 Got stuck at:
"gzip -dc <filename>.nif | tar -xf '" (minus the "")
----
GZIP -d NETSC4.51.tar.gz ...decompr the .gz to NETSC4.51.tar.
tar xvf NETSC4.51.tar .... decoded files were in a subdirectory.
I found the README instructions in there :
Move the files: *.nif to /netscape dir (among other).

"gzip -dc <filename>.nif | tar -xf '" (minus the "")
was the instruction, to decompress the .nif files one by one:

I get the > (right-arrow) on my screen ..... (I run as root)
... and the system seemed to be waiting for me ....
Control-C returns me to the cmd-line with nothing(?) accomplished.
How to proceed? What is lacking here ...?
Is .nif a valid compressed-file type?

I was in the ../netscape dir, same dir as the *.nif file.
I run RH 5.0. Default installation. 64MB RAM. 2GB hardddisk space.

The 'ns' command NETSC referred to as first choice for installation
 is not on my system.
Can I add it to my system? How?
