AFAIK (and this is from my first-time compiling a kernel)
you create zImage or bzImage and copy 'em to vmlinuz or
vmlinux (I've got both here...)
zImage requires a more compact kernel (ONLY what
*absolutely* need is in the kernel...everything else is
modularized.) bzImage allows you to throw in almost
everything, including the kitchen sink, so to speak....
