PRINTING MAN PAGES. (from 'newbie' 17sep99)
 surprise, surprise: As I am saving all your good info, for use
 in Linux, I exported the msgs from Eudora, saved the meat, next
 printing it using WIN98 and my LaserJet 6L ..... (using MSDOS/QEdit)
...... the ugly line showed perfectly normal on paper:

=== I PRINTED: (a line with double characters and formatting chars)
The text is horrible in Notepad. Following is via Wordpad.
# DDOOSS 66..xx WWAARRNNIINNGG
# The DOS 6.x FORMAT command looks for some information in
===

===    I GOT: (a perfectly normal line)
The text is horrible in Notepad. Following is via Wordpad.
# DOS 6.x WARNING
# The DOS 6.x FORMAT command looks for some information in
===

What will be the result when we print under WIN98 ?
MS Wordpad: It shows double characters AND the backspaces(?), in extenso.
Printed from Eudora: It shows double characters, no backspaces.
 (Eudora seems to filter out the backspaces.)

concluding:

In MSDOS/QEdit it prints correctly without processing. Based on:
  MAN <name> > filnam.
  QEdit filnam ... from MSDOS-prompt. QEdit is an old MSDOS program.
   My filesystem is FAT16 for best compatibility.
   Long filenames NOT supported under MSDOS.

In WINxx/ Wordpad it prints ugly. (but: 'as is', no surprises).

In Linux I will try out the information I got via Newbie list.

======================
   to get a ascii out of a man page, first filter out all the
   format you normally find in a man-page. To do that,
   $ man cfdisk |col -b > file.txt
For more details : man col

 and the ones still coming (maybe).

I adjust my 'signature' to show name and email addr. When exporting msgs
 from Eudora the header (and the email addr) is not preserved.
