I am running RH 6.0 distro of Linux with the latest updates (as of
yesterday) and I am still puzzled about configuring my computer to dial
up my ISP, download my e-mail and disconnect automatically

I used linuxconf to configure my ISP connection, usernet to toggle
ppp0, fetchmailconf to download my mail and I am using kmail as my
reader. No problem doing it with "point and click".

I have read the ISP-Hookup-HOWTO and the e-mail stuff they have on the
Red Hat site tips, but it seems the files mentioned either don't exist
or have different names, or were written by another program and
comments suggest editing files that don't exist.

My /etc/ppp:

drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 1024 Aug 31 14:26 .
drwxr-xr-x 37 root root 3072 Sep 18 17:46 ..
-rw------- 1 root daemon 78 Apr 9 23:33 chap-secrets
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 265 Sep 16 1997 ip-down
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 349 May 8 1998 ip-up
-rw-r--r-- 1 root daemon 5 Apr 9 23:33 options
-rw------- 1 root root 133 Aug 31 18:47 pap-secrets

I command:
[root@localhost ppp]# /etc/ppp/ip-up

and get:
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup-post: ifcfg-: No such file or directory
usage: /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup-routes <net-device>
usage: /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup-aliases <net-device>
search localhost

If I only knew what commands usernet sends, I think I could cobble some
cron script that would work.

Anyone got any tips and/or scripts I could use/modify?
