The things to check are (a) routing and (b) DNS. Also, see if you can ping
your ISP's gateway by IP number (not by hostname).
(a) If you run "route -n", do you see an entry for a default route to your
ISP? (You need to do this when pppd is up.)
(b) Do you have the IP addresses of your ISP's nameservers in /etc/resolv.conf?
