Hi,
You can use xf86config to get the desired modes and select what
color depth you want. You may however endup with 256 colors, if you have
selected that color depth also.( actually you can choose multiple color
depths ). To goto a particular color depth you can run startx -bpp 24 or 16(
depending on what you want ). You can also try putting in the
DefaultColorDepth clause in the Screen section of the XF86Config file that
you generally find in the /usr/lib/X11 directory. To find help on this man
xf86config.

Good luck,
prasanna

Which driver re you using, take a look at /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/Cards
for the corrret server.
If you are using the correct server then you will have to derfine
(cehck) out the Graphics device section and possably define more
resolutions in the Screen sections in you XF86Config file.

If all else fails rename you presant XF86Config to XF86Config.old and
run 'xf86config' its a text based program with simple yes and no
answers, all you need is the specs from your hardware to define things
correctly, xf86config normaly works when other programs like
Xconfigurator etc, fail to produce a good finished product.
