check out http://www.portalux.com/misc/laptops/ for a few links to
laptop related sites.
my experience, i have a Toshiba Satellite Pro, Pentium 100, 40Meg
ram, 750Meg hdd. i installed several versions of Red Hat on it now
and it works fine. the

page was a wonderful source for information on getting the sound, video,
and pcmcia working. i had to tweak the XF86Config to get the screen
resolution to 800x600/16bpp. i was using blackbox because it was fast
on this machine. i have found KDE works well enough, GNOME was
a dog. very slow with lots of swapping. i use Red Hat for the RPM. keeps
the hdd usage to a minimum.
have fun.
