To start an alternate window manager go to the /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc and
edit this file. Be sure to back it up first by typing
cp xinitrc xinitrc.bak
Now If you totally mess up that file you can restore is by
cp xinitrc.bak xinitrc
Next you should find in the last line of xinitrc a line that reads
exec /user/bin/gnome-session
comment out that line by putting a # in front
then add this line
exec fvwm2
and you are done. There are some other winows managers you can try by
replacing fvwm2 with "twm" or "AnotherLevel" or "fvwm." Try them out and
see how you like them. In some of these there is no "START" button per se.
You click the right, middle, or left button in open desktop space and it
brings up a menu of options. If you panic and cannot get the windomanager
to work right for you and cannot figure out how to get out type
"CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE" and that will dump you out of X and mack to the
console.
Have fun.
