I would assume this depends on the cable modem. Mine is 10 base T,
though I have not heard of any thinnet, ones. I run 2 SMC UltraEZ 's.
they are ISA Combo 10baseT and 10base2 (coax). They are well supported
by linux, and could probably go either way for you.
I suggest reading the Cable modem Minihow-to. It will explain the
services for different regions, and give you an idea of the minute
differences in configuring them for Linux. Most of these are related to
the network cards supplied by your cable company, not the service. The
only exception is I believe is/was Roadrunner(?) in Florida. At one time
your download was from the cable modem/nic, but upload was through a
dialup. Although this could have been beta testing from way back when.
