There are several ways,
1) make sure your isp and all known ip #'s are in /etc/hosts.
2) dont start sendmail untill your net connection is up and running.
3) Only start sendmail when you actualy connect to the net.
I am sure others will have more suggestions for you.
It all depends on how you are going to be connected, all the time
some of the time or just once in a while.
Option 1) should solve all problems.
