I am making a file server with Slackware 3.5 (2.0.34) with a 10/100 Fast
Ethernet PCI Bus Adaptor.
While I have had previous success installing an ISA LAN card on another
Slackware 3.5 server I am
stuck with installing this PCI one.
So far, I have done the following:
# cd /lib/modules/2.0.34/net
# insmod rtl8139.o <I think this is the module of the LAN card>
# vi /etc/conf.modules
<added line> alias eth0 rtl8139 <saved file>
Then the manual said to start "Network Configuration" in X, go to "network
configuration" , "interfaces"
and choose eth0 or module of LAN card. This, I assume, is a Red Hat
feature. Any way, this
particular computer was fitted with an AGP VGA card not fully supported yet
by Linux and I
am not prepared to start another quest to install the AGP on X yet.
Preferably I would like
to get the LAN card installed by text mode.
Is there another way around this problem?
I tried looking in /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1, /etc/rc.d/rc.inet2 and
/etc/rc.d/rc.modules but still cannot
figure out how to fix it.
The manual also went on to say that "if the modules do not support 10/100,
recompile kernel."
as follows:
# cd /etc/usr/linux
# make menuconfig ........ etc.
Unfortunate my Slackware version doesnot have a /etc/usr/linux directory.
Any suggestions here?
My next move is to read what the manufacturer had to say about Linux
installation in
www.realtek.com.tw but in the mean time may be someone can come up with a
quick
solution.
TIA,
