hello, it's been a short while...

i am using Red Hat 6.1,
i did an upgrade on one machine and a clean install on a second,
both are giving me problems connecting ppp. using the new
connection wizard (fancy /sbin/ifup ppp0) causes the hard drive
to trash continuously and the modem never even picks up. it
seems it would go on forever if i didn't cancel it. i
switched to the KDE dialer and i was able to get a connection,
but it dies as soon as it connects. the error mesg is:

pppd: The remote system is required to authenticate itself but I
pppd: couldn't find any secret(password) which would let it use
pppd: an IP address.

pap-secrets looks fine, as far as i can tell. it's set 600/root,daemon
i read at bugzilla a report that the connection would die on first try,
but then connect on the second using ppp-2.3.10 that was upgraded.
i don't know if these are related. the one machine i'm using is a fresh
install.

i've used red hat for a while now, so i'm pretty sure i'm doing
everything right. i was hoping it is something someone else has
experienced using 6.1. thanx in advance for any suggestions.
