I hope this is not regarded as too great of a transgression.  If you have a
dual boot system with
windows, then you can run a freeware product under windows called IrfanView
(see http://stud1.tuwien.ac.at/~e9227474/).  It does a nice job of
converting between formats - including avi and gfi.
