I don't use scanners but i add 2c:
TWAIN is a standard for scanner DRIVERS, not for scanner devices
(at least that is what i've been told).
So scanners should work under linux even without twain support,
linux developpers might implement a different driver approach.

there is a project call SANE (scanner access now easy) with is known
to handle parallel and scsi scanners (but not USB for the moment).
