how to "untar" a file

Hi folks,
I've downloaded Star Office and I'm trying to load it but having no
success.  It a tar file and I'm typing tar -xv <filename>.tr, when I then
press the enter key, nothing happens.  Can someone   tell me what I'm
doing wrong?
