I used an old slackware version (circa 1995). I don't know where you can get it
now. Does slackware make available any of it's old distros? I don't know. You
might want to check out they're web page. That distro worked quite well, but
I upgraded becuase the new software that is coming out requires the newer kernels
to work (BTW they new software also seems to require alot better hardware too,
hence my upgrade form that old 486 to a AMD K-7, with 128 MB RAM).

However, there is a nice new wordprocessor out ther that is quite lean (Ted) that
works very well. And if you are a lotus 123 follower, xspread works fine with
little resources.
