Might want to head on over to
http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/kharker/linux-laptop/
and see if your friend's laptop is listed there. If it is then you might
find setup tips from someone who's already "been there, done that". Some
sites will have complete XF86Config files to show exactly how to do it.
Also, further down that page is a collection of links to information about
XFree86 on laptops in general. I've not explored those links, but
considering the site in general there will probably be a fair bit of
pretty good info in those links.
