 but let's try to make the ethernet card work.

 what happens if you type 
 modprobe tulip
 as root?
 do you get an error that says
 init module: Device or resource busy
 ?

 if so read this part:
  do you see the card listed if you type
  cat /proc/pci
 
  if yes -- i'm not sure I'll try to think of more stuff
  if no -- check that it's plugged in well
  if you can't tell -- mail me (personally) the output of /proc/pci

 if you don't get the init module error
 what happens if you type 
 ifconfig eth0 up?
 does it say
 eth0: unknown interface: No such device

 if yes---
        go back and compile the latest _stable_ tulip
        driver and try that. The two compilation problems you
        were getting were just warnings.. you should have a usable
        module that might work better

 if no---
        sounds like a problem with the redhat startup scripts
        someone who has used redhat will have to help you
