Thanks, that is exactly what I was looking for, it worked perfect.

Basically I was writing a script to check the /etc/passwd for for errors,
users without passwords, users with uid's of 0, things like that, what I did
was this

list=`cat /etc/passwd | awk -F: '{print $1}'`
for username in $list; do
 # did some stuff
done

that would of be extermely hard if not impossiable without your help, thanks
