I get the same problem with Netscape, as you say, always when the link goes 
down.
I don't know how to stop it happening but I go to another virtual terminal
(Ctrl Alt F2), log on, and find out the process number using "ps aux | grep 
netscape", then kill -9 the process number.
There's probably a better way but it seems to work!
