Brilliant - it's working! Thanks for all the help over the last few days,
in the end all it was was CD wasn't connected in my null modem cable. I
was getting mislead because the same cable worked to connect as a
terminal. I would have nipped down the shops and bought one by now but I'm
30 miles off shore somewhere off Oman at the moment!
