If it were to stay the same that would mean that thier is no improvements,
no new programs, no new improved programs and the likes.
The size of a distribution will continue to expand, its the customer who
wants everything, so its only natural that the distro gets bigger.

You dont however need to install everything, its up to the installer to
install what he wants, even windows has that sort of option to a certain
extent.

There are many things you will possably never use, you spesifiy some under
here, so i would delete them in this case.

Oops, and you were complaining about space.??

Why not split your system into little partitions, Eg; /home /usr/local
/usr/src and possably /var, if you want more spesific details you can find

As long as you dont remove things like libs, and the likes then why not,
considering you have so much disk space, why not archive them and store
them on the large disk, of course if you have the distribution source then
there is no need to do that as you can always reinstall the deleted
archives/packages when and if needed.
