 In a standard installation of linux, after the system has booted, the first
process init will make 6 copies of the login prompt and attach each one to a
virtual terminal (or vt). When you are logging in as root, you are logging in
on the first one, which is tty1. there's also tty2-6. You can get to these
by pressing the alt key and one of the F keys. F1 for the first, F2 for the
second and so on.. So even if something is hung in one terminal, you can flip
over to another, as the system is not dead..
