Ok.. are you compiling 1.1.0? I want to grab the correct source so I can
follow along at home..

Is this actually the _first_ message you get, or do you
get about 8 lines of successful stuff, then this error?

Well.. hmm. what does linux say when you type
uname -m
uname -r
uname -s
uname -v
I belive the problem actually comes from the script
called config.guess, and these are the first four things it
does..
and What distribution of linux is this? are you sure you need to be
compiling this? Usually you can find precompiled binaries..
for instance, if you are on an rpm based system (redhat, SuSe, caldera
mandrake, turbolinux(?), more(?) ) you can grab one here
ftp://ftp.inet.no:/pub/socks/rpm/dante-1.1.0-1.i386.rpm
or If you really wish to just compile it and not figure out what's
wrong, I believe you could run
./configure --host=i586-pc-linux-gnu
if you have a pentium
or
./configure --host=i486-pc-linux-gnu
if you're running on a 486
hope this helps
