I finally got X to run by getting the XFree86 update rpms from Red 
Hat. I still can't get a screen resolution above 640x480 and that is 
some  times buggy and always off center on the monitor.

I'm running Red Hat 5.2 with the latest XFree86 update rpms on a 
GCT-MGX133 mobo with the Cyrix MediaGX chipset.The monitor is 
an NEC XV15 MultiSync. Both handle 800x600 16bit color quite 
well under Win95 so it's not really a hardware problem even if it is 
cheap hardware.

Is there some trick to setting this up? I used xf86conf since I 
couldn't get XF86Setup to run and couldn't get a working config 
from Xconfigurator. The current XF86Config file provides 640x480 
with extended desktop that only works if I  use startx > somelogfile 
2>&1 and a higher res mode that doesn't sync. If i just startx the 
display in 640x480 is in sync but full of mis-placed objects multiple 
images and other assorted garbage and part of the vitual desk top 
stays grey. Help! I did cheat on the vert sync rate which is the 
probable cause of the higher res mode not sync'ing. Monitor is 
rated at H 31-65kHz V 55-100Hz.
