If you done all the above "in the order" they are written in, then you wont
even be using the new kernel, it should be.
make config dep clean bzImage
make modules modules_install (if modules have been choosen)
cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinux-2.2.xx-1
(Where -2.2.xx-1 is the version number and the EXTRAVERSION number if
defined by you in the Makefile)
cp System.map /boot/System.map-2.2.xx-1
edit /etc/lilo.conf
THEN reboot.

There is no /ax25 directory, ax25 config files are located in /etc/ax25 but
only after you have installed the libax25 ax25-apps and ax25-utils which
can be found at;
