Hello,
Today I installed Linux on my laptop. Its a Pentium II 266 with 80
MB of RAM. I successfully configured XFree86 and compiled Wine.
Im writing this email from X, using Pegasus Mail (Win32 version)
thru Wine. Im sorry, but I havent found a comparable mail program
with native Linux support. Any suggestions?
This time Wine didnt take more than 10 minutes to compile, and I
was using the computer at another v . I was looking for a good
editor on my Conectiva CD, but couldnt find any. Is there a GUI-
based text editor for Linux? I want some DOS Edit or Borland Turbo
IDEs clone. I dont want to learn yet another user interface.
Wine does take a couple of seconds to load, but I guess that it is
still acceptable. Nobody told me about his/her experience with
Wine last time I asked. Maybe this time Ill get luckier ...
I need help figuring out what free reports. Heres what I got after the
Wine configure script finished, and before running the Wine make:
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 79296 77264 2032 6572 32476
37160
-/+ buffers/cache: 7628 71668
Swap: 128988 24 128964
But where there only 2032kb of free memory when there werent
any major programs running? What do buffers and shared mean?
Whatever they were, they were eating almost all of my RAM?
During the make wine, I issued two free. Here they go:
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 79296 77560 1736 9296 48204
17296
-/+ buffers/cache: 12060 67236
Swap: 128988 116 128872
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 79296 76324 2972 9320 45212
19004
-/+ buffers/cache: 12108 67188
Swap: 128988 116 128872
Then I issued my last free after the compilation had finished:
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 79296 41388 37908 7464 1328
36156
-/+ buffers/cache: 3904 75392
Swap: 128988 116 128872
Can somebody explain to me what this info means? I tried man
free, but it doesnt describe what the command reports.
Thanks in advance,
Jeremas Galletti
