Dear fellow Linuxers:

I've recently been fiddling around with Linux, and I've been learning
quite a bit. I can proudly say that I've managed to make a small
network between four machines, and it works fine (minus a few
glitches here and there that keep me up all night). My next step is
going to be IP-Masquerading, and after reading the How-To about a
few million times, I think I should be able to do it (just going to
upgrade the kernel to 2.2 on the machine I have picked as my
gateway and get a faster modem).

Now, I've been trying to set up a DNS server. I've read and followed
the instructions on the DNS-How-To, but I have to admit, this has
beem, to date, the most confusing How-To ever.
Now, theoretically my DNS works for finding remote sites. What I'd
like to know, since I can't seem to understand, how do I set it up
so that it resolves for local machines?

Example:
Assuming that machine3.localnet.net is my DNS server, fully
configured as far as finding remote sites are concerned.

machine1.localnet.net has a fully configured /etc/hosts and the
host.conf tells it to use both hosts and bind. resolv.conf is fully
configured as well.

I type "telnet machine2" and I can get into machine2.localnet.net.
In machine2.localnet.net I did not fill the /etc/hosts but just the
resolv.conf, telling it that the nameserver is machine3.localnet.net
(not the actual name, but the IP number).

However, if I try to telnet/ftp/ping to machine1.localnet.net, the
machine2 is unable to locate it.

Can someone point me to the right direction or perhaps give me a
sort of a "kick in the ass" to what I should do? I'm sure there is
something I am missing in my DNS server, in order for this to work.

Thanks again everyone.
Have a good year 2000.
