Core files are created when a program crashes. Basically what's in that file
is a snapshot of the memory that was being used by the program when it
crashed. They can be used by debuggers to try and track down what went
wrong. It's generally safe to delete them - the only purpose they serve is to
aid in debugging. That and taking up disk space.
