Hello Jim,
The Linux 2.3.35 kernel has lots of great USB features and will work with
many of the USB devices out there. If your friend is not keen to using a
2.3.35 kernel then patches are available at http://www.linux-usb.org.
(Also a great place for more information on USB and Linux).
