log files are used by the system log and programs in general, no dont
delete them, you will get into trouble with syslog(d) by doing so.
You can empty them in several ways while the syslog deamon is running.
> /var/log/message will completly empty the file,
tail /var/log/messages > /var/log/newmessages
cp /var/log/newmessages /var/log/messages
The above will copy the last 10 lines of messages to the new file.
If you are using redhat and i belive other distro's using the sysv init
scripts, slackware is an exception, and you have messages.1 .2 etc, then
there is no need to do anything as a small program run by crond every month
will delete all old files automaticly.
