Your comments raise some questions, firstly you say you defined 1024x768 but
you then say four area 320x200, so you dont have 1024x768 as default, that
could be because you are not editing the correct  sub section, there is a
section for each X-server make sure you edit the correct one.

It suggests further more that you are possably using the wrong X server.
Check that you are using the proper X server, with redhat check the
symbolic link in /etc/X11 it should point to XF86_S3 or XF86_S3V, Slackware
is normaly a symbolic link in /var/X11R6/bin

You could make a backup copy of your XF86Config file and run xf86config,
thats a small but very good text based program which will crate a new
XF86Config file for you, read VERY carefully what the program askes and
do what is askes.

If you problem persists, make sure you tell us which X server is being used
and what distribution you have.
