I get that message every time I log on, even if i have no mail. I've
noticed it is only when i have the Imap package installed. (and i
don't really think I need it)

For a few good reasons, get an external modem.

Easier to move to another machine
easier to instantly analyse its behaviour
Better chance of it not being a winmodem
The lights look good :-)
You save a slot on your m/board
