no. Modprobe is smart. Insmod is dumb.
For instance:
to load the ne2000 driver with insmod, it is a two step process,
first
insmod 8390
then
insmod ne
Modprobe understands module dependencies so you can just
modprobe ne
and it will work
It doesn't seem to come up too much with ethernet cards, but I have
5 modules which rely on each other to do sound and another 4 for
my pcmcia ethernet card, which adds up to a lot of typing or a confusing
easily breakable script. modprobe is better (except when it doesn't work)
