The box (as you call it) is actually just a hardwired adaptor. No protocol change.
Just connector to connector. No components.
And my mouse is both ps/2 and serial compatible. I have used it with both on
Windows. And I have used it as a ps/2 on my girlfriends HP Pavilion.
