Before this argument gets too unpleasant, let me toss in a word. Warren is
talking about a specific provider, @Home, not generic cable-modem service.
@Home is a particular **brand** of cable-modem service, but (oddly enough)
it does not identify a particular **technical** method of service
provision. @Home technology varies a lot from place to place; the Cable
Modem mini-HowTo I think I posted a reference to recently (URL
http://people.ce.mediaone.net/hey19/cable_modem_ht/Cable-Modem.html)
contains notes for @Home that detail some of the city-by-city differences.
Some cities use static addresses.
@Home is also, by repute at least, difficult to get working with Linux. No
doubt this too varies by geography. But the lessons are:
1. If it works, don't knock it.
2. Don't assume that what works for you will work for
an @Home subscriber in a different city.
