I assume the "two" of you are the same person, since your messages are
identical except for format. Please don't post the same question twice; it
really doesn't increase your chances of getting help ... in fact, done more
than once, it definitely *worsens* your chances.
As to your questions:
1. I don't use freewwweb, and I don't use kppp. Generally, you won't do well
trying to troubleshoot ppp problems by limiting yourself to what the GUI
tells you is going on. You need to look at the information being logged by
pppd and its associated dialer. A look at the log entries caused by an
unsuccessful attempt to connect might be enough to tell you what is going
on. If not, posting them here may let one of us help you.
I'm not quite sure how to interpret "needed to use a terminal window instead
of pap or chap". I suspect it means that you need to authenticate via a
userid/password login, the same way shell logins work. If so, that can be
automated using chat (the pppd dialer for us console users) and probably
using whatever kppp uses.
2. Most of the commands that Linux (and Unix) uses are actually small
programs. There is no one list of all of them; indeede, they are not
entirely uniform among variants of Linux/Unix, not even among Linux
distributions or versions. For a core set, I'd look at any beginner's guide
to Unix. Or you can look in the directories where these programs are -- /bin
and /usr/bin (and maybe /usr/local/bin) for user programs, /sbin, /usr/sbin
(and maybe /usr/local/sbin) for system programs, the ones only root would
normally use. Then enter "man command_name" for the actual command you want
to know about. You don't say which distribution you are using, but most have
man pages for most commands.
Also try looking at www.linuxdoc.org for an assortment of Guides. In
particular, look at Linux Getting Started Guide, Linux System Administration
Guide, and the somewhat old Linux Network Administrator's Guide.
